Simple Booth apps support printing to any AirPrint compatible printers. Most new consumer printers support AirPrint. This page on Apple’s website lists all AirPrint printers, so please be sure to reference that list if you don’t plan to use one of our recommendations.
We recommend two different types of printers. You may already be familiar with the “consumer” printers we suggest using. These are designed for photo printing and come AirPrint compatible out-of-the-box, so the setup is very easy! Consumer printers are more affordable but have slower printing speeds.
The professional printers we recommend are called dye-sublimation printers, which are also designed for photo printing. These printers are more expensive and have much faster print speeds than the consumer printers. This kind of printer is not made to be AirPrint compatible but can be paired with wireless print server software so that they can be used with iPads and Simple Booth apps.
These printers are more affordable, compact, lightweight, and easy to set up.
- Canon Selphy: The Canon Selphy is actually a miniature dye-sublimation printer! This model can print a 4x6 in 90 seconds and includes an ad hoc network you can print over.
The Canon Selphy 1200, and 1300 models are all AirPrint compatible.
- Epson PictureMate: The Epson PictureMate is an inkjet printer that supports 4x6” and 5x7” photo paper. The PictureMate can print in about 75 seconds.
The Epson PictureMate 400, 401, 520, and 525 are all AirPrint compatible.
Photo booths traditionally use dye-sublimation printers because they have fast printing speeds. The dye-sublimation printers we recommend can finish a print in as little as 30 seconds.
Dye-sublimation printers are expensive, but if you are using Simple Booth professionally it will be a good investment. The difference in print speed between these printers and the consumer printers we recommend will be noticeable at your events!
While the upfront costs for a dye-sub printer are greater, the long term costs for your media (paper and ink) will be lower for this kind of printer over the consumer printers. Check out how to use these non-AirPrint printers with our app here.
Recommended printer brands: We recommend DNP or HiTi brand dye-sublimation printers.
Note: If you plan to use an AirPrint printer that’s not primarily designed for printing photos (like a deskjet printer) we encourage you to test this with our app before your event to ensure you can properly format the prints.
