Camera & Screen Settings

Fine-tune exposure, white balance, zoom, and start screen transparency for the best booth experience.

Written by Emily Devlin

For the best results, make camera and screen adjustments on-site during setup, not from home or your office.

Along with the settings below, consider moving the booth or changing your lighting if you're dealing with harsh overhead lights, nearby windows, or other lighting challenges.

Lighting

A well-lit environment is essential for high-quality photos. We strongly recommend a dedicated light source regardless of your setup. See Lighting Recommendations and DIY Lighting Recommendation for options.

Accessing camera and screen settings

All of these adjustments are made in Mission Control, which you can only open after launching your booth and reaching the "Tap to Start" screen.

To open Mission Control:

  1. Place two fingers side by side on the start screen.

  2. Slowly slide your fingers apart.

Mission Control is designed to be hard to open by accident, so it may take a couple of tries at first.

Camera settings

Camera adjustments use sliders, and some include a lock option to hold your chosen setting.

Exposure

Exposure controls how bright or dark your photos look. Adjust it together with your lighting to find the right balance.

  • Keep exposure unlocked in most situations so the camera can adapt to natural lighting shifts.

  • Lock exposure only when the lighting will stay consistent for the whole event.

If the lighting will change over time, for example daylight turning into evening, check exposure periodically.

White balance

White balance adjusts color temperature, meaning how cool (blue) or warm (yellow) your photos look. It's usually fine as is. If photos look too warm or too cool, turn on Manual Mode and use the white balance slider to correct it.

Screen settings

Digital zoom

Zoom helps you frame your shots when booth placement is limited. Use it to center your subjects and fine-tune framing. The available zoom range depends on the iPad's camera, and it can differ between models and even between the front and rear cameras on the same device.

Level

Open the level tool to make sure your iPad isn't tilted. The indicator turns yellow when the iPad is level and shows red when it's still off.

Start screen transparency

Adjust how visible the "Tap to Start" screen is by changing its opacity. You can set it to fully opaque, fully transparent, or anywhere in between.

Gallery preview

Once your gallery has a few public photos, a live preview appears on the start screen if no faces are detected for a short time.

  • The preview disappears when a face is detected or the screen is tapped.

  • It's automatically turned off for private galleries.

  • You can turn it off entirely from these screen settings.
